I'm into scales right now.

Scales

We now have twelve fun tones: tasty, exciting, slightly boring. A piece of music with all twelve notes is nevertheless still a bit complicated. We also have a favorite selection, called Doremi faso lati, where every now and then another one is allowed to play. What other selections are possible and fun? A set of five notes ('penta') is fine with us. Every now and then a sixth is added for variety. In the meantime we think seven 'hepta' notes are fine, sometimes an eighth 'octo' for variation.

The Doremi faso lati scale has been a favorite for a few centuries.
Many musicians name this scale after their favorite note, the third note MI: major third scale,
This distinguishes the scale from their other favorite sclae with an IM: the minor third scale.
The French thought that to be a bit overdone. They stick to 'Majeur' and 'Mineur': 'major and minor'.
Calling a ladder after the size of the third is of course a nice idea. This is how you can indicate many of the 2048 possible ladders: as in: 'major, but with a 'IT', or 'minor, but, er, harmonious.
And then we had those cool Greek names. What about those myxomatosis ladders?

God gave us 12 notes,
it’s the same 12 notes that Duke Ellington had, that Bach had, Nina Simone...
... I’m thankful to God for those 12 notes. (Jon Batiste)
